I wrote another fanfic, everyone. You know what it's set in?
The anime version of Motherfucking Death Note.
I wrote an alternate ending to Death Note in script format. You can read it if you like. Just keep in mind, there are major spoilers in this entry. Also, this is based off the DN anime, not the DN manga. Keep that in mind.
Presenting: Death Note: The Alternate Ending.
What if: Light had won in the Death Note anime?
(The scene is an abandoned warehouse in the industrial sector of Tokyo. Inside are Light Yagami, and the Kira investigation squad. Opposite him are Near and his squad.)
[Near] Any second now, Mikami is going to open that door, and write everyone’s name in his Death Note, save for Kira’s name.
(Just like that, Teru Mikami, looking absolutely deranged, slides open the door into the room. He sees the true names of the investigators with his Shinigami eyes. He takes his pen and begins writing their names down in his Death Note in a most psychotic manner.
[Mikami] *while writing names* DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE!!!!!
(Mikami sees Light Yagami, but does not see his natural lifespan. This shows that he is the original Kira, and the ‘God’ that Mikami worships so dearly.)
[Mikami] GOD!
(Mikami goes back to writing everyone else’s names, including Near’s, whose true name is revealed to be Nate Rivers.)
[Mikami] DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELEEEEEEEEEEEETE!!!!!!! Whoa, I think I just had an orgasm.
(Light suddenly displays a smirk of arrogance. When he speaks, he speaks as the god of a new world.)
[Light] Well Near, looks like I . . . win.
[Matsuda] *looking confused* Huh? Win? What are you talking about?
[Near] It’s no use, Light Yagami. The Death Note Mikami is using is not the real Note book, but rather a fake we had planted. The gig is over, Light Yagami. We know you’re Kira.
[Aizawa] Whuh!? You think Light is Kira, too!?
[Light] But you’re wrong about one thing, Near. I knew you would hold swap Mikami’s Note book with a replica, and I had it changed back to the real one just before we got here. Say, Mikami, how many seconds has it been since you wrote the first name down?
[Mikami] THIRTY-EIGHT! THIRTY-NINE! FORTY!!!!!!
(Everybody in the room, except for Light and Mikami, dies from a fatal heart attack. Light looks in disbelief.)
[Light] It’s over. It’s finally over. I won. I WON!
(Light lets out a devilish laugh, a laugh of pride and righteousness. Mikami approaches Light. He looks at him like how a child would look at a parental figure he hasn’t seen in years.)
[Mikami] So . . . you are God.
[Light] That’s right. I am the God of a new world. I am one step closer to creating a world free of crime, where only good people are allowed to live.
[Mikami] Yes, YES! You are Kira, my one and only God!
[Light] Indeed. You have done a great service for me on this day.
[Mikami] But I only would do anything who is the incarnate of the true God of the world!
(Mikami rambles on about how much he adores Light. As he is doing that, Light takes out the piece of the Note book he had hidden in his wristwatch and writes Mikami’s name on it.)
[Mikami] So what next, my Lord? Shall we execute more evildoers?
[Light] Not right now, Mikami. You deserve a rest.
(Suddenly, Mikami has a heart attack. He collapses, and looks up at Light in saddened shock.)
[Light] For you see, there can’t be any living witnesses.
[Mikami] *dying* But . . . why? Why have you forsaken me . . . God?
(Mikami dies. Light smirks again. He takes Mikami’s Note book.)
[Light] Speaking of living witnesses, there’s one who has been more of a hindrance than a help to me, one I don’t need any longer.
(Light begins writing a name in the Note book.)
[Light] But . . . I should make things interesting for my next . . . target.
(Elsewhere in Tokyo, Misa Amane is walking the streets. She is dressed in what can best be described as an, “Elegant Gothic Lolita” costume. She is singing about Kira. All of a sudden, she falls into an open sewer and dies. Cut to Light’s apartment. He is reading the name, “Misa Amane” in the obituaries section of the newspaper. Ryuk the Shinigami is watching over him.)
[Light] Just as planned.
[Ryuk] So, Light, with your enemies out of the way, what do you plan to do, now?
[Light] Well, Ryuk, there’s something that’s been bothering me.
[Ryuk] Oh?
[Light] As I’ve studied criminal behavior, I’ve learned something; even if a person has never committed a crime in the past, that doesn’t mean they won’t commit a crime in the future. A person can grow up good, yet do something reprehensible later in life. Everybody in the world has the capacity to commit murder, rape, theft, deceit, terrorism, domestic abuse, child molestation. What’s to stop that man across the street from going on a killing spree tomorrow!?
[Ryuk] Well, I can say, humans are funny creatures in that regard.
[Light] Everybody I know, everybody in the world can commit evil! I can’t allow that!
(Light, looking panicked, reaches for a variety of books, magazines, newspapers, and other printed material.)
[Light] The students of my graduating class, the editors of magazines, famous people, even my own family! They are all capable of becoming evil at any second! I will not allow this!
(Light begins writing as many peoples’ names as he can, as fast as he can. Ryuk laughs.)
[Ryuk] Ah, so the plot thickens!
(Cut ahead to an indeterminate time in the future. Light is in his apartment. So is Ryuk. It is extremely quiet. Light looks at his Note book, full of names, with a sense of remorse.)
[Light] And now, to create a world truly free of crime, I must now write my own name.
(Light writes ‘Light Yagami’ in the Note book.)
[Light] How ironic that I would die in the same manner as most of my victims.
(Light suddenly collapses and dies from a fatal heart attack. Ryuk takes his Death Note and leaves. Ryuk appears in the Shinigami realm. Every Shinigami is there, staring at him with contempt. Sidoh appears from the crowd. He approaches Ryuk, with anger in his eyes.)
[Sidoh] What the fuck, Ryuk!? WHAT THE FUCK!?
[Ryuk] Huh? What’s this all about? Why’s everyone staring at me?
[Sidoh] Why do you think! You killed the entire human race!
[Ryuk] No I didn’t. Light Yagami did.
[Sidoh] BECAUSE YOU GAVE HIM YOUR DEATH NOTE!
[Ryuk] I didn’t give it to him; he found it.
[Sidoh] See, this is precisely why the elders said why we shouldn’t give Death Notes to mortals; so shit like this doesn’t happen! With the humans gone, how the hell are we supposed to extend our lifespans now!?
[Ryuk] . . . We could always go back to killing dolphins.
[Sidoh] Yeah, I guess so. Anyways, can I have my notebook back?
(Curtain.)
Author’s note: I love Death Note, I honestly do, but I will admit, it is really easy to make fun of. I remember shortly before the series finale aired in America, someone on a messageboard speculated that if Light really did kill off all of his adversaries, that he would eventually kill every person alive, realizing that only a world free humans is truly free of crime. I mentioned this to my mom, who also believed this is what Light would’ve done. (For the record, my mom has never seen Death Note, but I have told her about it. She had two things to say about DN; that it’s really morbid, and really interesting. I agree on both points.) So, I wondered, what would’ve happened if Near lost just like L did? Well, this is what I came up with. Not exactly a happy ending, mind you, but morbidly entertaining, nonetheless. I even was able to inject some dark humor into my alternate ending. That’s one thing I liked about the episodes with L; he had a terrific, if dark, sense of humor.
Then again, this fanfic also illustrates why I don’t support Kira. Most DN fans, myself included, believe that Light is the villain of the series, despite being the protagonist. Some people sympathize with him and his followers, and while the Kira slayings do lower crime, by the later part of the series, crime didn’t happen, because everybody was living in fear. Kira had created a reign of terror, despite acting in the name of justice. If Light really had triumphed over his adversaries, I dare not imagine what he would’ve done with the Death Note. He probably would’ve gone the same route as the rookie cops in Magnum Force did; killing people just because their dog pissed on their mailbox. So now you see why I was rooting for L, and later Near, the whole time. Also, I think I may’ve portrayed Sidoh out of character, but he was only a minor character, so it’s cool.
