Fanfiction. The word alone conjures images. Lots of people write it, quite a few people read it, provided it's on the internet. Even I have dabbled in fanfic authorship. It's true. I wrote a three-part fanfic set in 8-bit Theatre. The first two parts were great, the last part . . . not so much. I ended it in a way to show my 'fic was non-canon, so that I can't be held guilty of violating the original vision in anyway. My 'fic was basically just like the comic, except written like a novel, and with no pictures.
That said, I've also read some 'fics written by other people. You know what was the first 'fics I read? Pokemon fanfics. Yeah, there was a time I liked Pokemon, and I first learned about 'fics from Pokemon fansites. Only problem is, most of them really sucked. Like, really, really sucked. Only two of them were any good. One I read that didn't suck was about Lance, the dragon trainer of the Elite Four. The other one was a guy trying to impress a girl with his (lack of) mastery of Pokemon training. But, yeah, I don't really care about pokemon anymore.
Another time, I read 'fics based off Sonic the Hedgehog. Let me tell you, there are some seriously fucked up people in the Sonic fan community. And no, I don't mean 'LOL! Furries!*' either. I mean, I've seen authors turn Sonic into a, um, well, I know I hate using the word like this, a violent super emo character, Eggman into a total effing bastard, tons of profanity, bloodshed, the works. Then there were other 'fics that were bad because they were too much like the games. But, I did read a fantastic Sonic 'fic once. It was set after Sonic Adventure, but before Sonic Adventure 2. It was so awesome, Sega should've used that 'fic as the template for the story in SA2. It was so much better than anything official I have seen, Sonic-wise. Someone give that author a medal.
Then once, I stumbled onto a website called RPGClassics. They have a fanfic section. Thing is, though, they actually exercise quality control. They won't post a 'fic if it sucks. They have awesome 'fics based off FF4, 6, 7, 8, 10, and Chrono Trigger. Some of the best I've ever read. Go there. Now. If you don't mind reading 'fics, that is.
However, I recently read some, stuff, on tvtropes, regarding fanfics, particularly 'fics not based off games like I've been reading. I've learned some shit that I can't unlearn. And now, I ask you this:
Why are you people so crazy!?!?!
Have you no regard at all for the canon material!? Does the phrase, "Out of Character" mean nothing to you!? And why are you so obsessed with hot, steamy sex? Even if it involves characters who would never, ever, get it on with each other!? I guess it's a good thing I never got into Harry Potter that much. Or Evangelion for that matter, either. 'Cause I don't want to imagine what the majority of their fanfics are like, since I've been to tvtropes.
But, you know what's even more disturbing? Someone, somewhere out there has inevitably taken a character I like, and portrayed them in an insulting light. And also, you know that internet law that states that if something exists, then someone has created a pornographic image of it? I will not let them get away with this.
You will pay, anybody who has slandered the Elrics, Zidane, Nausicaa, Jade Curtiss, Yukari-chan, HK-47, Tron Bonne, Rorshach, Bender Bending Rodriguez, and anyone else I can't think of right now. Oh yes, you will fucking pay.
*According to what I've read now, a furry could be anyone who likes animal-like people. So, by liking old Disney shorts with Donald Duck, I could be considered a furry. Oh boy. Perhaps, though, it's acceptable, since I'm not, that much into it.
