big yes

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

I FEEL THE WARP OVERTAKING ME!!!!! IT IS A GOOOOD PAIN SENSATION!

SOUND THE TRUMPETS! I HAVE ANOTHER BLU-RAY TO PURCHASE IN THE FUTURE!

SQUEEEEEEEEEE!

You know I'm gonna say it. Or link it. You know what I know what the execs at Funimation are thinking. You want me to print it? You really want me to? Even if I sound like a broken record in doing so? Huh? Huh? Come on, you know you wanna see me print it. . . . Uh huh, yeah, I thought so.

{Breaking news} Funimation has licensed Rebuild of Eva 2.22 for DVD and Blu-Ray, And The Fandom Rejoiced!

{Funimation} Just As Planned.

SHUT UP! STOP MAKING FUN OF MY ADORATION OF EVA! If it is in my destiny to become an Evangelion otaku . . . then so be it.

"Holy shit, you guys. He just might make those dreams of his come true. He won't . . . hide the potential otaku within anymore."

"Yeah, but if that's the case, it'll only be for Eva. Imagine if he became a general anime otaku."

"Somehow, I have a hard time picturing him with a body pillow, yeah, let's just leave him with his Rebuild for now; let him dance a jig of joy."

If it exists . . .

. . . There is a wiki for it.

Case in point: Evangelion Wiki.

I was bound to find this, considering that I wrote another Eva review on MAL, and that I just can't stop reading Nobody Dies.

By the way, NB version of "Asuka Strikes!" > NGEtv (ah, see!? I'm learning the fan speak already!) version of "Asuka Strikes!" Isn't it funny how I used to hate Asuka, and now she's my second-favorite character in the series? Keep in mind, I still hate the tv version of her . . . which unfortunately is the version of Eva most people are still familiar with.

THIS MUST BE RECTIFIED!

Almost had me

So, you know what I've been doing now, aside from writing more Touhou fanfic? Reading more of my favorite Eva fanfic of all time, Nobody Dies. I will admit, some of the pop culture references are tacked-on, (though I'm guilty of that as well; Hong Meiling quoting Kenshiro, anyone?) and there are some syntax errors with the spelling and grammar, but by Adam, when it's running on all cylinders, it delivers.

But you should get a load of the tvtropes page for Nobody Dies; it's really comprehensive! A comprehensive entry for a fanfic, I know, and it's not the first time they did that for an Eva fanfic either.

But what does the title of this entry refer to? Well, guess what? Nobody Dies has spawned fan input. There are Youtube vids of people quoting the Angels, as well as fanart, and even a forum wherein Rei Ayanami TehRei interacts with forumers. But getting back to my title, check this pic out. Isn't that sweet of Yui, volunteering as a crossing guard at a school? Oh look, Little Asuka-chan is really cute! I had no idea she was so kawaii as a child!

"Oh! You just lost The Game, xm! Now you have to blow money on Eva merchandise!"

Au contraire, my faithful associate. The (current) Asuka gamble says that if I find the Rebuild of Eva version of Asuka to be cute, I would then buy merch. It doesn't read, "If I find a fanficcer's interpretation of Asuka to be cute", so you see, you almost had me, but not quite.

". . . dang you."

Oh, but I'm not done yet. Look at what I already described in my own Eva fanfic; Asuka and Rei fighting over Shinji. It looks almost exactly like the manga! That's amazing!

Soooooooooo~ when's Rebuild 2.22 coming to America?

Oh by the way, you know that doujin, RE-TAKE? I forgot to talk about it. It was good, but not great; certainly not on the same level as Nobody Dies, but I did like the ending.

"Oh yeah, I'd bet that you looooooved the ending, didn't you, you fucking Shinji/Asuka shipper! You weren't even shipping them 'til you read the volume of the manga that introduced her, you fucking fanboy! Oh, and congrats on telling everyone at FF.net about your Shinji/Asuka whoring when you wrote the making of Ask Rachel Alucard, 'Oh, I'm talking about a vampire girl from a completely unrelated franchise; SHINJI/ASUKA O T P B CUZ THEIR KAWAII!!!!!!!' GAWD, you are as bad as everyone else when it comes to fictional romances; you're just more selective about it.

Oh, and was the hooking up of Shinji and Asuka in Nobody Dies a deciding factor in declaring it one of your top five favorite fanfics of all time? Gawd, you're so predictable!"

Okay, I know, I don't 'ship' that often, but when I do, it's always because of The Almighty Narrative. If a work of art is more enjoyable if x dates y instead of z, I will do it. I never like to see a 'ship' that doesn't serve The Almighty Narrative unless if it's for lulz. (ex. most yaoi pairings.) Now I'm sure Nobody Dies would be just as awesome if Shinji courted someone else, but I have noticed a tendency that most of the good Eva fics tend to have Shinji/Asuka in it, and when I wrote my own fanfic, it made the most sense for Shinji to take Asuka. So there.

Get the fairy repellent!

Just when I was lamenting the lack of named fairy characters in my Touhouverse, ZUN announces this!

So now Cirno is the star. And we have character artwork by someone other than ZUN or someone at Tasofro, in fact, none other than the author of one of the three Mischievous Fairies manga series. And now Sunny, Luna, and Star are finally appearing in a game. This can only mean one thing:

MORE AWESOME CHARACTER THEMES!

Now I'll finally get to hear what the motifs for the fairy girls will be like. And maybe one or more new characters will  be introduced. Oh, the possibilities are just too juicy!

By the way, I've seen in the forums that suddenly there is a spike in the number of people reading the mangas that feature the fairies. Hmm . . . is that sooo~? (Wait, Rumia's not a fairy, but she sure comes across as one. Hey, Rumia hasn't appeared in my fanfics either.)

Well, I guess that leaves just one last thing to say:

TOUHOU WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Forgot to link music. Check it.

An IOSYS . . . rap. Featuring Ali Su, A-Patchy, and Mari-sama. (I was trying to think of rap names for Alice, Patchouli, and Marisa, forgive me.) I guess it was bound to happen; Touhou hip hop. I don't normally like rap, but I'm making an exception today.

And speaking of fairies, I think ZUN may've already composed music for the new Fairy game. Case in point. It sounds exactly like a stage theme. And I think I found a boss theme just now. Also, Star is the cutest of the fairies. Don't let her send you into kawaii-induced shock.

But wait! There's more!

Ah yeah baby. Byakuren is now the goddess of Deep Purple knockoffs. By the way, nice title on this one, IOSYS, but hey, I like it.

FURTHER EDIT: A new Touhou girl has been introduced to the world! Please welcome Kasen Ibaraki! (sorry, no pics for you)

Don't know anything yet . . . except a few fans have already proclaimed "Kasen is hawt, lol." Okay, it's official; a large portion of the Touhou fanbase disgusts me. Mainly for this.

Me: I love Touhou! The setting is beautiful and I love the characters!

Most other fans: OH GAWD OKUU IS HOT!!!!1111!!!

Why must there continue to be such a huge disconnect between me and most other people?

What is my muse, exactly?

I dunno, really. Why am I writing these Touhou fanfics to begin with? What is my muse, or inspiration that drives me? I don't even remember what drove me to write my own Touhouverse. I do have a guess.

(flashback a year ago. xm talks to himself, sounding an awful lot like Professor Farnsworth.) (Remember, I can imitate Professor Farnsworth very well in real life)

Make fun of fanfiction, will you? Make fun of Touhou fanfiction that isn't a fancomic, will you? I'll show you! I'll prove to you that an English-speaking Touhou fan besides Usually Dead, KimikoMuffin, and Mima can write good fanfiction, damnation! (starts walking away) And they called me mad when I sought to do the same thing for Sonic, well I'll show them too!

(present)

Yeah, I don't know. However, something that can help me, provided it doesn't distract me too much, is music. And lo and behold, I have more remixes to show you.

Stage 5 MOF in techno and I'm guessing Miku Hatsune providing vocals

Kanano and Suwako's themes mixed together. Yeeeeeeees.

That may not seem like much, but I'm trying to pick remixes that you can't find on tvtropes.

Now then, back to Mentor and Protege.

Before I can introduce Alice, I have to introduce someone else first; a woman named Yuka. I don't think I've ever talked about Yuka yet. Well, I'm making up for that now. Writing her dialog is interesting, to say the least. Oh yeah, FYI, she is not moe in my Touhouverse. At all. In fact, as far as I can tell, the only characters who could possibly be moe in my Touhouverse are the fairy characters.

Hey, I just noticed; I've never written Cirno in any of my fanfics, and I don't have any current plans to either. That's strange; do I not like Cirno? Hmm, maybe it's just she doesn't have much influence in Gensokyo.

Oh, also, on my profile, you may've noticed that I have something called "Unnamed Yukari Project." I've been working on that for a few months. It's only going to be a "one-shot", (although I do have plans to do a sequel to it, which would also be a one-shot) but I got a feeling I'll get praise for it. What's it about? That's a secret~ Oh, by the way, I have decided on a title for this, but I can't tell you what it is because the title itself is a spoiler.

There's also something listed as "Unnamed drama series" which used to be "Unnamed Reisen Project." Well, my Touhou muse has driven me to write a story about how Reisen came to be in Eientei for a while now. However, this story would probably be only 2 or 3 chapters in length at best. I thought, hey, why not do a series that explores the backstories of Touhou characters you haven't already written backstories for? So now that is in the making. And guess what? Not only do I (kinda) have Reisen's backstory mapped out, I (kinda) also have the backstories of the Moriya family mapped out, too. I'm on a roll! Oh yeah, I also have the title of this series decided, but you're gonna have to wait to find out.

Free time and some Flash

I have found myself with a lot of free time right now. And now I have a flash game to recommend.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover.

The link just goes to the website. I did that in case it gets updated again, so you don't accidentally load up an outdated version.

So, SMB1. Most popular 2D platformer in the world. However, what if one could play through that game, but as a character from a different NES-era platformer. That's what SMBC lets you do.

In addition to Mario, you can also play as Bill Rizer from Contra, Samus from Metroid, Mega Man from . . . Megaman, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Each of them controls almost exactly as they did from their original games. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, and some are good on some levels, but crappy on others. Mario is still playable, even though he's the same as always, however, SMB is his natural habitat. While the game can be beaten with the other characters, their play mechanics don't always mesh with SMB1. With that said, my favorite character is Samus. She's the best jumper, and she has a ranged weapon. And to think, Nintendo tricked everyone into thinking she was a dude back in the 80s . . .

Playing as one character plays music from their NES games during gameplay. This is part of the fun.

Now, another subject. Because of my free time, I started writing more Touhou fanfic. However, I'm making a change; I'm not covering Lotus Land Story in Mentor and protege. I'm going straight to Mystic Square. Truth is, the narrative in LLS is almost non-existent. The only significant thing LLS did was introduce Yuka, but she also appears in MS. Why not just skip to that, and then finally introduce Alice.

Oh man, my interpretation of Alice is what's gonna separate me from other Touhou fanficcers. I can feel it. One more chapter, then I can finally upload her backstory. And then things will finally become . . . interesting! go . . . exactly as planned. start to come full circle. Dang man, I can't wait!

Routes

Let's get back to the Nasuverse for a moment.

I've played through Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night. They are technically of the same universe. With both games combined, that's 8 routes. You wanna see how the routes faired? okay.

8. Hisui route.

Ugh. How do I describe this? Throughout 90 percent of this route, NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS! And when the ending finally does roll about, it's too depressing, especially the true ending. It is as Coach Z would say, "A real loard! A real loard!" A completely unnecessary route I feel, since the important information is also present in the Kohaku route.

7. Fate route.

Ho hum. Generic "good guy beats up bad guy" route. Way to introduce FSN to people, Type-Moon! No wonder the anime version scared off some people; this route is extremely generic! It doesn't do anything countless shonen/seinen series haven't already done.

And also, between you and me, there's no way Shirou would ever dump Tohsaka for Saber, not even temporarily.

6. Ciel route

I do like this route; I just don't like the spoiled portion below.

Shiki obviously is crushing on Arc, and his choices to stay with Ciel feel extremely forced. I think it would've made more sense if Shiki didn't hook up with Ciel. It's unexpected, and I think would've felt more realistic. And no, this wasn't in any way influenced by my "Shiki/Arc and Shiki/Akiha OTPs!" opinion.

The scenes with Roa were amazing.

5. Kohaku route

This ended with a twist. (insert M. Night Shyamalan joke.) It didn't end how I thought it would. It also contained the revelation of the Hisui route, but ended on a better note, and thankfully, unlike in the Hisui route, stuff actually happened here. I think the only reason this seems so "lowly" placed is that I'm not really much of a fan of the twins. I know; sacrilege, how dare I not whore myself to red-haired maids, but still, not bad.

4. Heaven's Feel route.

Damn dude, this was hard to read, but it was worth it. Shirou and Sakura as an item make sense, Zouken is one of the most evil villains ever, Tohsaka pulls off some amazing bravado, and even Kotomine does interesting stuff. It only lost out to UBW because Shirou doesn't get as much development here, but otherwise, this route isn't as bad as some fans make it out to be.

3. Unlimited Blade Works.

This was my favorite FSN route. Archer's assholishness is explained, Shirou becomes very memorable, it has great action sequences, and the true ending makes me very happy.

Tohsaka-chan was sooooooo cyute in the ending! Shirou/Rin OTP!

also, the true end segways into the fanfic I recommended on Tvtropes perfectly.

2. Akiha route

Dang, I can't decide between this and the Arc route. Ugh, I guess I'll just go with which is my favorite and second-favorite character. This route had it all. Won't say anymore; read it yourself!

1. Arcueid path.

A REAL vampire story. Enough said.

So, 5 great routes, 1 route  I feel ambivalent to, and 2 worthless routes. 5 out of 8 is pretty good. Alright, so when is Kara no Kyouki the anime coming out in America? I'll wait.

"Come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams!"

Before I go on, I need to say something in character as xm0123.

(ahem)

fuck you otakus who had dissuaded me from watching/reading One Piece for so long. I can understand if you don't like a series that runs too long; that's a legitimate complaint, but when your complaints are "The art isn't anime-like enough!" or "it's too kiddie-fied!" or my immortal favorite, "because it's popular with faaaaaaaaaags! (read, people who don't normally like anime/manga)" then you're just being a bunch of ungrateful assholes. ONE PIECE IS GOOD!

I have watched the first 18 episodes of the anime version thus far, and I like what I have seen so far. Before this, my only familiarity with OP was a youtube video (that's now down) that compared the 4Kids and Funimation dubs, showing the 4Kids version to have lameass music, butchered dialog, mismatched voices, and edited out violence, while the Funi version, well, I thank Funi for saving a popular anime series EVEN IF THEIR ONLY REASON FOR DOING SO IS TO FURTHER THEIR CONSPIRACY TO TURN ME INTO AN OTAKU! from the abyss of digitally erased blood, even if there isn't that much blood in the original anime. Let's go over why I like One Piece so far, shall we?

First off, the art. The first season debuted in 1999, the age . . . when anime series were still pre-digital. Wait! OP actually has pretty good animation! Sure, there's a few animation flaws, but it's not enough to detract (too much) from the action. The backgrounds are sometimes sparsely drawn, yet other times, they can be quite detailed. And the character art? I like it. Most of the characters don't look like typical anime characters. They look like . . . like people from the world of OP. Every character image is very, well, full of character. Really, I think the reason some fanboys and fangirls don't like OP's art is because there aren't a metric ton of huge-eyed girls with huge boobs, and there aren't a metric ton of "hawt" bishonen guys in it. Who needs attractiveness when you've got character!? (Then again, I can understand some people liking Zoro's looks . . .)

Second off, the actual story. It's adventurous. It's actionous. (Hey, it's my blog; I can make up words if I want to.) It's dramatic. It's comedic. It's another multi-genre work that can effectively switch genres without feeling ham-fisted, which I appreciate. The action, though, it's quite something. OP doesn't succumb to the deadly shonen cliche of power levels, I.E. the entire battle's outcome is determined only by a person's raw strength. I hate this, but you never see it in OP. So, those of you turned off by shonen action, don't worry! There's nothing like this:

"UH! OH! HE'S! POWERING! UP! I! BETTER! POWER! UP! IN! KIND! BEFORE! HIS! POWER! LEVEL! EXCEEDS! MY! OWN!"

in OP. Just so you know. Also, even though I'm only 18 episodes in, I can already tell that this series has strong characterization. Luffy is a fun-loving boy full of adventure, Zoro is a wisecracking master swordsman, Nami is a crafty yet greedy thief navigator, Usopp is completely full of himself yet can get quite dangerous when need be, et cetera. But it doesn't just end with the main heroes; the minor characters are very fleshed-out too. But what takes the cake are the villains; the villains in OP are complete bastards. No shades of grey here; these bad guys are real bad, and it is so satisfying to see them receive their comeuppance. Captain Kuro in particular is now one of my favorite anime villains of all time. As of right now, I'd say my favorite character is Zoro. Why? He can fight with a cutlass held with just his teeth! How cool is that!? It's isn't enough to have a sword in each hand, oh no; he's got a third sword in his mouth! That, and he has funny dialog.

But the best thing specifically about the anime version is its soundtrack. The soundtrack is really good. Know why? It's a full orchestra! And a well-utilized one at that. It's my belief that a full orchestra is the best kind of instrumentation to use for a soundtrack, since it is the most versatile of musical outfits. But, much like in America, most Japanese tv shows don't use full orchestras, so it's usually a treat when one does. Also, I love the opening song; it captures the mood of OP perfectly. But, even better, I like the English version of "We Are!" even more. It's my favorite English-dubbed anime theme song of all time*! And I can sing along to it!

And lastly, the acting. I've seen episodes in both English and Japanese. They both sound really good. However, I prefer the Japanese version more. Know why? I like the dialog more. The characters almost sound . . . noble, in the subs. And there's also less forced swearing. (Darn you Cartoon Network, for making Funi's dub sound more 'adult!') This isn't to say the English voice-acting is bad; quite the opposite. I like Zoro's English voice more, and I like the theme more in English. On the other hand, the dialog is better in Japanese, and the characters don't shout as much either. Hey, at least it doesn't have the out-of-place accents and forced hamming of the 4Kids dub, right? Heh heh!

So, I can't give a score just yet; I mean, I know the Straw Hats eventually consists of nine members, and I'm only at four right now! However, I like what I see, and will continue to watch when there's no Soul Eater up. So, final verdict?

There's always room for you,
If you wanna be my friend.
We are,
We are on a cruise!
We are!

*Suck it, Pokemon theme! Sure, you may've been the only salvageable thing about the first season of the 4Kids version of the Pokemon anime, but you cannot compare to the power of Vic Mignogna and pirates with hearts of gold!

Ask Rachel Alucard: Behind The Scenes!

Chapter 1

This is the introduction chapter. I didn't answer any submissions because, well, I just started! Therefore, I had to make an impression. I wrote an introduction paragraph trying my best to capture Rachel's manner of speaking. As I wrote it, the idea suddenly came to me that Rachel would never use a computer. Keep in mind, she's a mockery of old European aristocracy; wherein the lords and ladies were not expected to perform any menial labor, no matter how easy some tasks may be. Dictating her writings not only made more sense, but suited her personality better. Also, I didn't start the intro with something like, "Greetings. I am Rachel Alucard." I went for a more arrogant sounding route that basically said, "If you don't already know who I am, then you have no business here." In a way, she's right; my fanfic is by a Blaz Blue fan and for Blaz Blue fans. If a stranger tried to read Ask Rachel Alucard, they'd be completely lost.

Oh, also, when Rachel said, "I could indulge you with anecdotes of my life here on this webspace . . . (but I won't)" that was a lie. Many of the intro and concluding paragraphs in future entries usually detail a story in Rachel's life. And I posted the usual disclaimers, (it's non-canon, Rachel doesn't believe everything I believe, etc.) and done.

Chapter 2

My first entry came from an email by Sieg-sama. The order of the questions is actually different. The actual order as it appeared in my email was so:

"Dear Rachel: Why is there so much . . . RachelxNoel art on the official BlazBlue site? . . . Do vampires sparkle? (AKA your take on Twilight) . . . Is Nago gay?" I thought it would be more amusing if I reversed the order.

The first question I answered dealt with Nago's sexuality. Because of his Mah-velous manner of speech, some fans like to think he's gay. I could be wrong, but I think otherwise; Nago (in my fanfic anyways) claims he doesn't limit himself to one orientation. In short, he's bisexual in my opinion. Of course, considering that he's also obsessed with sex, I think I unintentionally perpetuated the Depraved Bisexual stereotype. (Just so you know, I don't assume all people attracted to both sexes are sex maniacs. I know a bisexual person in real life who isn't. And I'm absolutely certain that if I was bi, I wouldn't be a sex maniac either.) But I just went with it for the chuckles.

Question 2 dealt with Twilight, however, as it appears in Ask Rachel Alucard, the Twilight name is censored out. Well, I plan to do a "retcon", for you see, Rachel actually knows about the Twilight franchise, but she hates it so much, she refuses to acknowledge it by name. I have no experience with anything concerning Twilight; I just know that every last one of my online friends absolutely. Ha. ATES. Twilight, and Rachel's rant was based on their complaints.

Question 3 I saved for last because I believed it to have the best humor value. On the Japanese Blaz Blue website, there's a page for selling merchandise. Some of this merchandise shows pictures of Noel and Rachel . . . um . . . not wearing very much. The only reason such artwork would exist would be to excite otakus. Well, Rachel's response was basically her immediate reaction to seeing these pics. This started the running gag of Rachel being repulsed by sexuality. This was another common trait of the noble class; to avoid the subject of sex whenever possible. Not only that, in the actual Blaz Blue canon, Rachel comes across as very asexual to me; she's not dressing to impress a mate, she never talks about love and sexuality, and as such, I wrote her as such a person. I could be wrong, though; several authors on FF.net would have me believe otherwise. But yes, her immediate reaction was golden. By the way, those images were echi, not hentai. If Rachel came across Rule 34 . . . it would mean the end of the human race as we know it.

Chapter 3

In the intro, Rachel notes that being posted on FF.net makes your entries look rather . . . primitive. If she had a more elaborate blog, I'd imagine it'd look more to her liking; have a portrait of her, make the blog look like Gothic architecture, but alas, that is not to be.

The question by animefanrk2k asked if Rachel knew about fictional vampires, citing Dracula, "The Alucards," and Arcueid from Tsukihime as examples. However, as per one of my disclaimers, Rachel didn't reveal if she knew any vampires in her reality, but she had heard of the examples listed. She knows that her last name is Dracula spelt backwards, and that some versions of Dracula are better than others. (Aside: my favorite version of Dracula? The 1979 film starring Frank Langella as Dracula. It's a must-watch.) She then mentions that she's also heard of Alucard from Hellsing, but doesn't identify Hellsing by name. Okay, to be honest, I am most definitely NOT a fan of the Hellsing franchise, and that's putting it lightly. However, to a vampire, Hellsing would appear less "blasphemous" than Twilight, so Rachel didn't really insult Hellsing, but rather, the idiot fanboys who only like it for its violence and sexual content. Man, they are annoying. Oh yeah, Rachel's aside was from the fact that her last comment should've ended with a smilie, but she refused to have that printed, because let's face it; printing a smilie would look crass, especially to a noblewoman.

And man, you people are lucky; I had just discovered Tsukihime like a week before I started writing Ask Rachel Alucard. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have been able to comment on Arcueid. Well, I couldn't say much, because I didn't want to spoil Tsukihime's plot, but I noted that Arc, like Rachel, has blonde hair and red eyes. Why do Japanese authors think that all vampires have blonde hair and red eyes? I mean, sure, I like red eyes, but seriously, it's a little obvious, don't you think? Oh, also, those comments Rachel mentioned? I found comments like that in an imageboard talking about Arc; there are some . . . very devoted fanboys out there, to say the least.

As for the second question, Rachel's right; Baroque and Classical music are from two different eras of European music. If you make such a mixup in front of a music professor, expect to get chewed out.

Chapter 4

A question by Cypher0120 asked about Rachel's "social link level" with Ragna, like she's from a Persona game. I had to be careful here; I'm dealing with the concept of relationshipping here, and whilst I myself am usually not too fanatical about shipping, I realized, I'm on FF.net right now, a place that will cut you to shreds if you so much as raise the subject of whom Ichigo should hook up with. So I made it vague; Rachel may very well be in love in Ragna, or maybe she isn't. Maybe in a later game in the canon, she will go all gooey from just thinking about Ragna, or maybe not. The only thing certain at this point is that Rachel does have more respect for Ragna than what she normally has for guys like him. Interesting, to say the least.

The second question by Wraith the Destroyer asked what Rachel thought of the other playable characters. Her opinions are basically as such: Jin is an asshole who needs to be seriously reprimanded, Noel is a moeblob half the time, but can actually do stuff when she's serious, Litchi's boobs have got to be fake, Arakune is creepy to say the least, Bang is an obnoxious Kamina ripoff, Carl is just projecting onto his "sister" so that he isn't lonely, Taokaka is a cat . . . that talks, and therefore is hellspawn, Tager is alright so long as he isn't in his "Golden" form, Hakumen is like Jin, except less mean and more driven to beat the "justice" out of everyone in order to save the space-time continuum, and Nu is a freak who can't decide whether she wants to hug Ragna or destroy the world. Most of my own opinions for the characters are more positive than Rachel's, but she is right about Jin; someone needs to slap him.

The last bit is a sketch wherein Nago reveals to Gii that he's been watching an anime featuring a naked Rachel look-a-like. I was hoping someone would send a question asking if that was Dance in the Vampire Bund, (which it was), but yeah; Nago likes that show, (no surprise) but Gii, well, I don't think it's up his alley.

P.S. Shinji/Asuka 4 life.

Chapter 5

The cold opening is not one I made up; there is a yonkoma comic series on the Japanese site for Blaz Blue. One of the comics shows Rachel doing her hair in a ponytail, only for Ragna to point out that Bang also has a ponytail, which she responds by zapping him. There was no dialog, but I added some in my version.

The question by Osaka cha-ness asked if Rachel was anything like Evangeline A.K. McDowell. I looked up Wikipedia and tvtropes, and learned that Evangeline was a character from Mahou Sensei Negina, a series . . . that I know absolutely nothing about. What information I did scrounge up, I printed, so long as it didn't sound like a huge spoiler. Hopefully, I didn't print anything erroneous about Evangeline.

The second question by Raim Hanta Heraklinios was referencing the Touhou Project. What luck that you asked about my biggest fanfic project at the moment! The question was if Rachel considered herself a perfect being. The strange thing is, Rachel already answered that question in the intro of chapter 4, so she just reiterated her position. Really, this response was more about her learning about Touhou, and the two characters referenced in the question; Yukari Yakumo, and Remilia Scarlet. Rachel notes that Yukari seems to be a lot like the titular character of Daisy Miller: Daisy is young and beautiful, Yukari . . . looks young and beautiful, they both wear nice clothes, and they both go against the rules of society. She's wrong about one thing though; Daisy is very impulsive, but Yukari is not. Sure, the Yakumo family leader seems impulsive, but if I ever get around to finishing my Touhou fanfics, you'll see otherwise. As for manipulating people around her, yeah, that's more something Yukari has in common with Rachel.

And of course, Rachel comments yet again on another vampire girl, this one Remilia. She notes that Remilia is a vampire noble like her, but is also one who is much more selfish than Rachel. Being as someone who has written my own interpretation of Remilia, I have noted the following: Remilia is more polite than Rachel, but more childish, whereas Rachel is more mature than Remilia, but also more condescending. Writing vampire princesses is fun!

Chapter 6

The cold open here references a scene from the arcade mode of the first Blaz Blue. I played as Rachel, and her encounter with Litchi started off a dialog passage that played out pretty much like what I described. This age confusion has to be a constant source of frustration for Rachel.

The questions by Heartful Peach were from an email. The first question asked about Rachel's family. In truth, I'd actually like to know that myself. However, I couldn't answer that because of my spoiler clause. As for question two, it's hard to say; all that is known at the moment is that Rachel's estate exists in a dimension other than our own, and that her stage is entitled "Halloween." By the way, if any fighting game developers are reading this, put more thought into naming your arenas; you'll make yourself more respectable in doing so. Question three was about her favorite weather. Hint; her favorite weather condition is the same as my own favorite weather condition. There are times when our minds overlap, man. But I also had to remark on the last paragraph of the email; you see, Heartful Peach's profile lists Rachel as one of her favorite fictional characters of all time, (hey, if you're gonna list a vampire girl, I say better Rachel than Seras Victoria. BURN!) and the email said she was a "follower" of Rachel's. Rachel hoped that Heartful Peach wasn't a fangirl by the end of that response.

The question by Kaori the Mystery is a legitimate question; why is Rachel so choosy about her teas? Well, I think it's just a side effect of her upbringing. Anything less than ideal would displease her.

Chapter 7

The cold open references the fansite Fighter's Generation, which said that Rachel was practically perfect as a character. This, combined with the emails, made Rachel feel almost sentimental. But then, that ends when she mentions that some of her fans upset her. I've seen forum posts say that Rachel is "hawt" or that she's cute, (and let's be honest; she is kind of cute.) However, in her upbringing, beauty, grace, and dignity are favored for noblewomen, not cuteness and sexiness.

The question by Discordia Goddess of Discord and Heaven asked if Rachel knew any witches. Sadly, I have no idea who any of those characters are supposed to be. Like, not a clue, at all. I just had Rachel talk about the portrayal of witches, and even mentioned that there's a witch in Touhou, (aside: now Marisa Kirisame; she's cute!) but then I moved on to the second question, which should've read as followed:

"aren’t you a bit too N-E-G-A-T-I-V-E?!"

But FF.net won't let me print an exclamation mark and a question mark together, so there you go. As for the question, it's a legitimate question; why is Rachel so mean to people? Well, first off, I actually have portrayed Rachel here as less of a bitch than in the first Blaz blue game, but on the other hand, as she said, that may just be a side effect of online communication. My guess is that Rachel was raised on ridiculously high standards, and combine that with the fact that her home is in a separate dimension from ours. Being isolated and spoiled is most likely what makes her so condescending toward people. (That, and being mistaken for a little human girl.) Also, there is the fact that most people, especially in Blaz Blue's future, aren't raised in aristocracy like Rachel. There's very few people she could relate to, if there is anyone she can relate to. Wow, looking at it like this, Rachel almost feels like a tragic character. But hey, at the very least, she never went so far as to blot out the sky with scarlet mist, am I right? (LOL Touhou reference)

In the ending sequence, since no one asked me about Dance in the Vampire Bund, I just went ahead and had Rachel reveal that she found out about it and that she was, in her words, "Most displeased." [Hint; she says "Most (something)" a lot in my fanfic.] But still, you have to admit, the character of Mina looks almost identical to Rachel. I was surprised to learn the developers didn't try to sue the makers of Dance in the Vampire Bund, until I learned that the original manga version of Dance in the Vampire Bund predates the earliest Blaz Blue game by at least two years. Rachel, upon realizing this, retreats without saying much, possibly because she may've been embarrassed again.

Chapter 8

The intro here is basically my own frustration with FF.net, but reinterpreted by Rachel.

The question here was a pretty basic one; XDarkZeroX asked if Rachel was aware that there was a non-vampire anime girl that resembled her, namely, Fate Testarossa from Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. I have tried to watch Nanoha, but I couldn't get into it. I do remember that Fate was the one memorable character from that series, and in retrospect, she does look like Rachel in the earlier seasons: "loli" figure, long yellow hair in pigtails, (seriously, is there no other hairstyle for vaguely dark anime girls?) red eyes, yeah, it's definitely noticeable.

The last paragraph exists for two reasons: 1: I don't want to write anymore Ask Rachel Alucard until after I've played through the console version of Blaz Blue: Continuum Shift. I want to incorporate its plot details in future chapters. And 2: I need more responses before I can continue. Keep sending me responses, (preferably after playing Continuum Shift for yourselves) and sometime after the game is released, I will bring back Ask Rachel Alucard. Until then, you're just gonna have to wait.

Now then, the most important question:

"Why Rachel Alucard?"

That's a very good question. Rachel is my second-favorite character Blaz Blue, but not my all-time favorite. Taokaka is my favorite. Why didn't I go with "Ask Tao" instead? Well you see, as much as I love Tao, she is a flat character. Not flat as in boring, but flat as in she isn't very complex. She's basically a cat that can talk and does cute things, and little else. Rachel, by comparison, is a round character. She has more sides to her personality, and is much more complex. With Rachel, I have the ability to respond to questions with answers other than, "Mew? Is that something you eat?" Also, how often do you get the chance to interact with a pompous goth vampire woman? Not very often, I bet.

Although I would like to do one response as Bang sometime. He's my third-favorite character in Blaz Blue, you see . . .

Makin' bacon!

The Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream arc of Mentor & Protege is complete! Now I just need to do the next PC-98 Touhou game, then I can finally get to the Mystic Square segment. Wish me luck.

Also, I'm very close to finishing another edition of Ask Rachel Alucard. It will be my last episode prior to my inevitable playing of Blaz blue; Continuum Shift. However, I have also been working on something else related to Ask Rachel Alucard, which is why it's been taking a little longer than usual. That other thing being an article that goes behind the scenes for Ask Rachel Alucard. This and chapter 8 will be uploaded at the same time.

However, this is not stopping my newfound obsession with Key Visual Arts. I am trying to acquire as much research on their properties as I can without spoiling myself, and there's a possibility that I may watch AIR on Funimation.com. Which is only further proof of their conspiracy to turn me into an otaku! Nevermind the fact that the AIR license originally belonged to ADV! Funimation will stoop to new lows just to turn me into another member of the weeaboo masses! It's only 12 episodes long, so I'll consider it.

However, in my research, I found Visual Arts' youtube channel! Which . . . is almost entirely in Japanese. But I found that they have the trailers for their games. Guess what I found out? The opening song of Kanon is the same one from the game, but shorter; the full score is actually pretty good. Also, the VN version of Clannad looks epic; I am now debating whether I should support them by buying the anime version, or wait for a completed translation and "pick up" the VN version. So many choices, so little time.

Hey, what's this? A trailer with that cute Russian girl from Little Busters?

(dies)

"WOOOOOOOO! 20 to 1 kill/death ratio on Modern Warfare 2! I AM A MAN!"

"I didn't know you had that ability to kill that many players with a Barret .50 cal, Blue Yoshi!"

"Neither did I! Hey wait . . . xm, are you alright?"

"Check his pulse!"

" . . . Don't worry guys; he's not All Dead, just Mostly Dead."

"Phew, what a relief. Hey, what's that on the computer screen?"

"It looks like a youtube video finished, I wonder what he was-"

"-DON'T HIT THE REPLAY BUTTON! That video must've been what killed him . . . mostly. The title . . . I can't read the title since I don't know Japanese, but the channel is Visual Arts."

"Wait, like, Key Visual Arts? The people that make those moe shows that everyone either absolutely loves or absolutely hates?"

"Yeah, that one. xm must've been looking them up, 'cuz the other day, I heard him talking about a robot girl he said was a lot more moe than the robot girl from Chobits."

"Oh gawd, are you saying he OD'd on kawaii-ness again!?"

"Looks that way."

"Great. I just remembered the last time he OD'd on moe girls."

(flashback)

"xm, we're here! Hey, uh, xm, where are you? Holy shit! Are you alright!?"

"Check his pulse!"

"He's alive, but he's not moving. Hey wait, why is there a manga near his hands?"

"(reading title) Cardcaptor Sakura Master of the Clow volume 4. In other words, volume 10 . . . OH GOSH! LOOK AT HER EYES!"

"DON'T STARE DIRECTLY AT HER, VILE! ONLY SOMEONE WITH A HIGH TOLERANCE OF KAWAIINESS CAN READ CCS!"

"Yeah, well, looks like not even xm could withstand it. I wonder what it was that caused him to OD?"

(Back to the present)

"God damn it! Why does he keep doing this!? Aren't there cute girls in his hometown?"

"There are, but he doesn't like talking about real girls, because he feels that's gossiping. Or at least, that's what he told me."

(Sometime later after the resuscitation effort)

Okay I'm back. Geeze, the last time I fainted from cuteness was when I read the 10th volume of CCS. Seeing Sakura-chan and Tomoyo-chan (er, the CLAMP Tomoyo) dressed like maids was simply too cute for words! Guh! Must not dwell on that! Still, I didn't like how the guys brought me back to life.

(flashback)

"Kallen is fucking HAWT!"

(suddenly snaps back to life) BULL-FUCKING-SHIT! KALLEN IS A FUGLY PSYCHOBITCH!!!!!

"Ah, that's the xm I remember!"

(back to the present)

At least with that Code Geass fanfic, I can picture her looking semi-normal. But anyways, look forward to the last chapter of the Calamity Trigger-era Ask Rachel Alucard. I may even finish it later today, which would be . . . . . .

Excellent.

(Yeah, before I quoted Death Note to no end, I was quoting The Simpsons to no end.)

"Ralph Wiggum." "Yay! I won!" "No, you didn't win, Ralph; you failed English." "Me fail English? That's unpossible!"

The Key of appeal

Key Visual Arts is in my eye right now. It seems like all of the things Squaresoft was once renowned for: detailed storylines, beautiful character art, great music, instead seem to be applying to Key more often these days. Having played Planetarian and watched the KyoAni version of Kanon, and having liked Planetarian and really liked Kanon, I think it's safe to say that their products appeal to me.

Yeah, they appeal to me alright.

Maybe it's because they know how to write believable and likable moe characters, but I find that Key girls make me gush in my feminine voice. Even characters from Key products I currently have no familiarity with make me melt. And now, I present, the list of every Insanely Cute girl from a Key product!

(NOTICE: This article has been updated frequently since its initial posting. Some of the following information past the lists represent outdated opinions of mine. Okay, disclaimer over.)

First, the girls I actually know about:

Nayuki Minase.

Ayu Tsukimiya.

Makoto Sawatari.

Hoshino Yumemi AKA Reverie Planetarian.

Nagisa Furukawa.

Kotomi Ichinose.

Sanae Furukawa.

Fuko Ibuki.

Mei Sunohara.

Ushio.

Kudryavka Noumi.

Haruka Saigusa.

And now the Key girls I think are Insanely Cute just from looking at them.

Kotori Kanbe.

Yui from Angel Beats.

Chihaya Ohtori

Keep in mind, this list is not permanent. If I get around to actually playing or watching these series, and if I find myself not liking any of these ladies, expect them to get erased from this list. However, I can't deny the fact that their visual designs are just adorable!

But speaking of interest, I would actually like to watch the anime version of Clannad. It's gotten an insane amount of positive praise from anime fans, and you can buy the first season in a boxset now, complete with English voices. And Tomoyo.

Oh geeze, now there's two Insanely Cute anime girls named Tomoyo. How do I tell the two apart? The CLAMP Tomoyo is the dark-haired one, the Key Tomoyo is the light-haired one. Huh, that's easy to remember, but I'll have to make that distinction from now on if I don't want to print their last names.

But yes, tread lightly whenever you're looking up images from Key products. You never know what may be lying in-

-(sees image of Kudryavka Noumi)

OH NO! NOT KUDRYAVKA!

(insert first 28 seconds of this musical selection)

I don't know who she is, but she's so kee yee yuut! Her hair is just so lovely, and her round face and huge blue eyes just radiate kawaiiness! Aaaauuuuuuuuuu~! I just wanna pick her up and hug her until my arms get sore!

GUMF!

Sorry about that. Remember when I said I had an addiction to kawaiiness? Yeah, I still have that.

EDIT: This was updated on July 29th, 2010 to include Kotomi Ichinose on the list. Why list her?  Well, I just got a really good look at her for the first time and . . . and . . .

SHE IS JUST SO CUTE! AAAAAUUUUUUUUU~ CAN I TAKE HER HOME WITH ME!!?!??!? PUH LEEZE!?!?!?!? PRETTY PUH LEEZE!?!?!?!?!

Guh!

How superficial am I? I thought I prided myself on not immediately getting all gooey just from looking at someone! What the hell, me!?

EDIT: This has now been updated on August 15th, 2010, to include Nagisa Furukawa on the "I think she's cute just from looking at her!" list. Why? Because, well, you see . . .

SHE'S JUST SO CUTE IN HER MERE APPEARANCE!

However, here's something else you need to know: I have watched Air. I did not like it. Also, none of its characters are Insanely Cute. Well, I guess that little girl with the red pigtails was Moderately Cute, but no one set off my kawaii sense. Sadly, that is the least of the Air anime's problems. Oh well. I still have my memories of Kanon.

EDIT: This list was updated on September 12th, 2010, to include Kyou Fujibayashi on my list of Key girls that are cute from just their main appearance. Why would I include her? Well, I was looking up promotional artwork for Clannad, aaaaaaaand . . .

SHE HAS AN INFECTIOUS SMILE! AND A BEAUTIFUL PHYSIQUE! A GIRL AS HUGGABLE AS HER MUST BE LISTED!

Wow, and I haven't even experienced Clannad yet. What is wrong with me?

UPDATE AS OF 10/8/2010. Tomoyo and Kyou got bumped off. Their personalities aren't cute enough to make me melt. And to think, Tomoyo's the prettiest girl in Clannad. I did add Sanae, Fuko, Mei, and Ushio, though.

However, when I said that I wanted to take Kotomi-chan home with me, I wasn't kidding; I REALLY WANT TO! SHE IS JUST ADORABLE! KAWAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

And yet, I still feel compelled to keep Makoto on my MAL list.

EDIT AS OF 6/4/2011. Kud got upgraded to the proper list of Insanely Cute Key characters! Wahuuuuuuu! And so did Haruka, who you wouldn't suspect was Insanely Cute, but actually is! However, Komari got bumped off for being too much of a moeblob. Still, two Insanely Cute girls is two more than what Air had.

EDIT AS OF 6/14/2011: This list has been updated to include Chiyaha Ohtori on the "She's cute just in her mere appearance list!" Why? Just look at her and see for yourself.

However, I am now aware that Yui is technically not a character from Key. Although Angel Beats was conceived of by Jun Maeda, he handed the concept to people outside of Key Visual Arts. Still, since Maeda is responsible for the initial ideas for most Key VNs, I'm gonna keep Yui on this list, just because.

Where can I buy one?

So, you wanna know what VN I played?

Planetarian.

And why on Earth would a product like Planetarian intrigue me?

"Gee, I don't know, the girl on the cover is cute?"

Oh yes! The first reaction I had when I saw the cover was,

"MOE OVERWHELMING!"

Planetarian is what is called a "Kinetic Novel." It is a visual novel in which you can't make any choices at all. In a sense, it's not a game, but a true novel. The novel itself isn't very long; it will take you about 4 hours to complete. I don't wanna go into the detail of what the novel is about, but I'll say it's kind of like the Fallout series, but without the 1950s references. There's only two characters, "The Junker" and Hoshino Yumemi.

OH NO! NOT HOSHINO!

Yes, she's the cutie on the cover. As far as robot girls go, she's definitely one of the cutest, certainly a lot more cute than Chii. This novel was developed by Key Visual Arts, which frankly doesn't surprise me.

I can't call this a classic, since there's no interactivity, and parts of the story are predictable, and the ending is a little too drawn out. However, the writing is very good, the music is good, and Hoshino is utterly adorable.

However, this entry is just a footnote; playing this has sparked my interest in all things Key-related. Hit the next post page to see more.

VNs: the next step?

Hey y'all. My utorrent client's been busy again. And as such, I am now playing a new visual novel, but I'm not gonna tell you what it is just yet. Can I at least play through some of it first? Okay then.

However, to further my interest in VNs, I found a new website.

visual novel database.

It's MAL, but for VNs! And IMDB, but, again, for VNs. Word of warning; I just got back from some of their messageboards, here's a little lesson: not everyone who's interested in VNs is also interested in anime and manga. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise; any VN that is not a kinetic novel is functionally a video game, and many video game fans are NOT fans of anime and manga, even if they like Japanese-made video games. Remember, I used to be like that myself for eight years between 1999 and 2007. (In fact, when I first started this blog, I hadn't even been into anime for over a year yet.) I even heard them say, "I'd rather be called a VN otaku than an anime otaku! Sure, everyone will think I'm a perv, but at least I don't jack off to Code Geass doujinshi!" (okay, so I reworded that, but be aware, nonetheless.)

As for what VN I'm playing? Well, I can tell you what I'm not playing. I'm thankfully not playing anything with H content this time, and it's not anything by Type-Moon either. Also, I'm not playing Kanon, since I already watched the anime version. What else could I possibly do in the original VN?

1. say something nice.

2. say something snarky.

[Yuichi] (say something snarky) I see; so your full name is Ayu Ayu?

[Ayu] Uguu, IT'S NOT AYU AYU!

But then again, how else am I supposed to bide the time between now and when Blaz Blue: Continuum Shift comes out?

By the way, I am not a member of vndb, and I probably won't be. It is a useful resource though.

But before I go, when I tell you the name of what the VN I'm playing is, you'll understand exactly why I would be interested in playing it.

A summary of reviews

As you know, I've written reviews on MAL, but I haven't copied them here. I won't. Instead, I'll summarize them. The categories will be like this:

Intro: how I start off.

Story: Plot, or lack thereof.

Art and animation: hopefully not retro 80s.

Music: The background noise.

Voice-acting: Hopefully not retro 90s.

Characterization: What are the people like.

Enjoyment: The fun I had or didn't had.

Last Word: Obvious.

Welcome to the NHK.

Intro: Man, I'm glad Funimation saved this anime!

Story: Really depressing, yet fucking hilarious.

Art: When Gonzo didn't run out of money, it was decent. When they did . . . ugh.

Music: Really good! I love the OP!

Voice-acting: Holy shit! An ADV dub that sounds good!? What the fuck!? Well, you got Chris Patton, Greg Ayres, and Luci Christian in the cast, and John Swasey directing; that's a good recipe.

Characterization: So realistic, it will inevitably put off a lot of otakus; and draw in people like me.

Enjoyment: High. No episodes sucked, and the ending was good.

Last word: It's one of the most realistic anime ever, but that's a good thing, I assure you.

Baccano!

Intro: A Japanese production that feels very American . . . Shinichiro Watanabe, is that you?

Story: Three at once, all taking place in the early 1930s. I would've been satisfied with just the 1930 plot, but what the hey, it's all good.

Art: Pretty good. Nothing otherworldly, but nothing bad, either.

Music: It's the 1920s again!

Voice-acting: By jove, it's one of the best eva, sista! You got guys n dolls talkin' like their in a James Cagney pictcha, and it doesn't sound too screwy for the most paht!

Characterization: Better than you think. Ladd Russo is terrifyingly great.

Enjoyment: This show only exists to entertain you. It does that really well.

Last Word: The OVA's really good, too.

Kanon 2006.

Intro: Otakus won't shut up about this, so I tried it out for myself . . . and I loved it.

Story: Slow to start, but really interesting.

Art: BEAUTIFUL! KyoAni's best! I love everything: the character designs, the backgrounds, the animation! This is one reason I love Japanese animation; some of their shows have movie quality artwork!

Music: Decent.

Voice-acting: Really good, especially since this is ADV we're talking about.

Characterization: Some of the best ever. More men should be like Yuichi in real life. Also, NAYUKI AYU AND MAKOTO ARE SUPA KAWAII!!!!! ^_^

Enjoyment: If the start was better and the ending was better, I would've given this a 10. And I'm serious.

Last Word: Kanon was one-step short of becoming one of my top five favorite anime series of all time. As it is, think of it as It's A Wonderful Life, the Animated Edition. (Also, moe girls don't always suck. Fuck you.)

Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11.

Intro: I am not a traditional Eva fan. Therefore, I will look at this with a different frame of reference.

Story: I would've given this a 10 if they didn't cut out most of the school scenes.

Artwork: holyshitamazing. I'd like to see Disney top this.

Music: Really good. Very retro 60s, but that's not a problem; the 60s was the decade of groovy music!

Voice-acting: Absolutely perfect . . . In Japanese. In English? Puh-leeze.

Characterization: better than the older Eva anime.

Enjoyment: Through the roof.

Last Word: WATCH THIS ALREADY!

Tsukihime manga.

Intro: I haven't read this whole series yet, but it's awesome!

Story: Deep.

Art: Akiha-sama is not as pretty! THIS IS HIGHLY UNACCEPTABLE! But otherwise, good enough.

Characterization: Arcueid deserves your worship, and you're a fool if you don't think these characters are wonderfully written.

Enjoyment: I like this almost as much as the original game. Wow. I guess adapting visual novels isn't hard.

Last word: READ THIS ALREADY!

Man, I haven't had the chance to review something I hate yet. Hmm . . . there's still Code Geass . . .
