Now that my mid-terms are over, I splurged. I bought the rest of Eureka Seven on DVD. When they arrive, I will watch them.
BUT!
I bought some things today.
Number one: The Special Edition of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Since I already own Sleeping Beauty on DVD (oh, excuse me; Disney DVD.), I went ahead and got another Disney movie that was recently re-released, namely, TNBF. I've seen this film before, but I've never actually bought it until now. It's great. I think the picture and sound quality is slightly better now than the last DVD edition. Of course, keep in mind, I didn't get the Blu-ray version, because, well, I'm cheap and don't have a blu-ray player. (Maybe I should get a PS3, just for that.) But I've already raved about this movie, so I'll tell you what's new.
There's an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie. There is also a short featuring the poem that Tim Burton wrote that inspired TNBF. The poem is accompanied by artwork for the movie, and is narrated by Christopher Lee. Yes, that Christopher Lee. His voice is fantastic, as it always is.
There's also two shorts by Burton on disc two; Frankenweenie, a retelling of Frankenstein, and Vincent, an animated short. Frankenweenie is kind of like a shorter version of Edward Scissorhands; it's pretty good. Vincent is basically a five minute stop action short meant to showcase Burton's quirky sense of humor and love of gothic visuals. By the way, Vincent is narrated by Vincent Price. Yeah, another famous actor with a great voice.
So if you like TNBF but never had the film, there's no reason not to own it now. If anything, do it so you can listen to "What's This?" whenever you want.
Numer two: XXXHolic Omnibus Edition #1. Del Rey is starting to release omnibus versions of Tsubasa and XXXHolic. I already own Tsubasa, so I don't need its omnibus, but XXXHolic, well, look at this. Holic Omnibus #1 has the first three volumes for only 13 dollars. An individual volume would set you back 11 dollars. So, three individual books would be 33 dollars plus tax. But the omnibus is 13 plus tax! I save 20 dollars! It's a bargain!
Unfortunately, unlike with the omnibus re-releases of the manga versions of Azumanga Dai-Oh, Dragonball, and Rurouni Kenshin, the Tsubasa and Holic omnibuses are not extra big, and the "colored" pages are still rendered in black-and-white in the American release. But still, 3 for 1!
I decided to get Holic the manga for a number of reasons: one; it ties in with Tsubasa, my favorite CLAMP series. Two; it's different. It's not like all the high school comedies and Dragonball ripoffs that litter the manga market. (I mean, I like Bleach and Naruto, but they are so blatant ripoffs of DB! I only like them because they are far less asinine that DB was.) Three; the manga version of Holic has nicer artwork than the anime version, and nowhere is this more evident than with the character that is Himawari.
OH NO! NOT HIMAWARI!
Oh yes! I mean, the designs just can't compare! She is just so much prettier in the manga! And, I will totally understand if you like to say, "Himawari-chan!" in the same tone of voice Watanuki-kun uses.
I have another entry to do, but that will come later. For now, I must bask in my newest additions to my library.
