Tales of the Hopelessly Deranged

It's been a year-and-a-half since the last time I played a new (for me) Tales game. My supressed inner Tales fanboy has been unleashed and is about to wreak havoc on this blog right about

HAIL MARTEL!!!!!

Now. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Greetings, world! I'm back! Why is this place named "xm0123's Domain"? Blasphemy! It should named after someone more grandiose, more fitting for a person like me. It should be something like Chester's Domain, or Lloyd's Domain, or Guy's Domain. Okay, those are rather generic sounding names, and I've never even played Tales of Symphonia so I'm surprised at my own knowledge of said game, but whatever!

There's something amiss about Tales of Eternia. Oh don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it, however, something's missing. TOE's story is . . . lightweight. It's basically this: [Main hero] Let's beat up some monsters! [Rest of party] Okay! *go dungeon crawling forever* It's really basic, kinda like the earlier Dragons Quest games . . . or the first Kingdom Hearts. COME AND GET ME, SQUARE-ENIX LOYALISTS!!!!!!! On the plus side, people often complain that too many RPG characters are depressing, "emo", and nearly as rotten as the villains, if not more. TOE is not like that. All your heroes are a lively, optimistic bunch . . . and also have as much character growth as is typical of an average Mario game, but since I don't care about story in games, that doesn't affect me! So long a game isn't a full-blooded adventure game a la Monkey Island, I don't care!

However, I do hope that TOE's ending has more resolution than the Ending for Tales of Legendia. Man, talk about letdown. TOL did try to tell a real story with real dialogue and a few awesome characters. But still, even with cool characters like Chloe Valens and Jay the Unseen, that was offset by Norma "Look at me! I'm a bastardized Yuffie/Selphie/Rikku rolled into one!" Beatty, and a Mary Sue who doubled as "moe" fanbait. That's too bad. I really wanted to like TOL. Alas, we were not meant to be.

In other news, did you know there's a sequel to TOS coming out for the Wii? And did you know there's a brand new Tales game coming out for the 360? Two systems I don't own! *insert unintelligible grunts of frustration* What must I do!?

Well, if I can never play those games, at least I'll die happy, after having played Tales of Phantasia and Tales of the Abyss. Those games are gold, world! GOLD!

"Is he gone?"
