When I last played FF7, it was about seven years ago. (LOL! 7 years ago I last played FF7! What a coincidence!) I got to the town called Costa Del Sol . . . and that's when I had to return the game.
I haven't quite gotten to Costa Del Sol yet, so I'm still treading familiar territory. However, I did recruit someone I hadn't had the chance to use until now; Yuffie. Yes, the original (as far as I know anyways) teenage girl gigglebox. Not as amusing as her successor Rikku, but less annoying than her immediate successor Selphie, I have discovered why Yuffie is adored amongst the GameFAQkers; that chick knows how to throw down. She's currently apart of my preferred party. Since you can't substitute Spikey Head out, that leaves room for my other preferred party member, Red XIII. Why Red, though?
BECAUSE HE'S THE GODDAMN RED XIII!!!! YOU DON'T NEED A REASON BEYOND THAT!!!!
However, after revisiting this game well after its initial release, for both PS1 AND PC, I have discovered a few . . . issues that bother me.
For one, there is no analog precision. All the newer FF games in 3D have this, and it makes field movements a lot, LOT easier. Since I'm so spoiled, I find navigating anywhere that's not the world map to be somewhat awkward. Also, some of the pre-rendered backgrounds are hard to navigate, the train graveyard in Midgar being a notorious example. This, combined with no analog precision makes xm angry.
Also, while the game's dialog isn't as incomprehensible as the gibberish in FF6, it can still use touching up, beyond the typos, off course. There are a few good lines, but not like in the later FF games. I'm seeing a pattern, here.
One last thing before I move on; even if the game received a proper remake, you know, with better graphics, voice-acting, arranged music, better translation, and whatnot, I still don't think FF7 could be as good as, say, FF12. And also such an event could very well set in motion the second otakulypse, but FF1 thru 6 have seen remakes; I think it's only a matter of time before lucky #7 makes a comeback.
But still, flaws or not, FF7, as of so far, is still a very good game, even if its importance has been exaggerated over the years. I don't know, though, I hear the game falls apart after Grey Locks offs a certain someone, (No, not Shinra. After that event. Spoiler alert!) but the only way to know for sure is to play through the thing and find out myself. Here's hoping I can do that in due time.
